Our Approach

Clear teaching. Purposeful learning. Growing independence.

At The Study Nook, students are not expected to simply “work it out”.

Learning is made explicit. New skills are broken down, modelled and practised with support before students are asked to apply them independently.

Our approach is grounded in a simple idea: when students understand what they are doing, why they are doing it and how to approach it, they are better equipped to use that learning again.

We teach the thinking, not just the task

A student may know what a metaphor is but still struggle to explain its effect.

They may know that a paragraph needs evidence but not know which evidence to choose.

They may know they should annotate but have no idea what they are looking for.

At The Study Nook, we make the invisible parts of learning visible.

Students are explicitly shown how to notice, question, connect, explain and make decisions about their learning.

Because knowing what to do is only part of learning.

Understanding how to think through it is what allows that learning to transfer.

Learning should make sense

English can ask students to do a lot at once.

Read a text. Understand it. Identify important ideas. Recognise techniques. Find evidence. Structure a response. Use the right terminology. Explain their thinking clearly.

When all of those demands are presented at once, students can become overwhelmed — even when they are capable of doing each part.

Good teaching makes the process clearer.

At The Study Nook, complex skills are unpacked into manageable parts so students can understand the thinking behind a task before bringing those parts together.
